Alipay's 2016 'Collect Five Blessings' card game — 790K users split a 215M yuan pot

What it had to solve

For the 2016 CCTV Spring Festival Gala, Alipay was the exclusive interactive partner — a CNY showdown with WeChat Pay's wildly popular red packets. The team wanted engagement and, above all, a social graph: users adding each other as friends inside Alipay.

How it works

In early 2016, Alipay became the exclusive interactive partner of the CCTV Spring Festival Gala — the biggest television moment in China — paying 268.8 million yuan for the role. The prize was not just exposure but the social graph: after WeChat's red packets had made payments social, Alipay wanted users to add each other as friends inside its own app.

The original plan was hourly 'shake-style' cash red packets, but the team added a second layer that became the real invention: hidden 'fu' (blessing) cards. Users who collected all five — 富强, 爱国, 和谐, 友善 and 敬业 — could split a 215-million-yuan pool. The 敬业福 was deliberately rare, so finishing the set required adding friends, swapping cards and begging on social feeds. Product manager Chen Guanhua later called the card game 'a stroke of genius' that grew out of a scrapped applause-based idea.

The mechanics worked beyond expectation. On New Year's Eve, 'Xiuyixiu' interactions hit 324.5 billion, 29.5 times the previous year's gala; the first round alone logged 67.7 billion interactions in five minutes. 790,000 users completed the set and each received 271.66 yuan. Alipay said sponsorship and advertising revenue for the event exceeded the 268.8 million yuan partnership cost, so the campaign was profitable on top of building social connections.

In 2017 the idea matured into an AR game — point the camera at any '福' character, scan it, and collect blessings — with lower difficulty and a bigger budget. Alipay's executives scored the year's version 80 out of 100, participation grew, and partner apps reported concrete gains. The case page by agency 有门互动 described the result as a new finger-tip New Year ritual, turning the gala stunt into an annual habit.

Why it lands

  • Engineered scarcity made sharing necessary: with 敬业福 rare, the only way to finish the set was adding friends and asking for cards.
  • A single shared pot (215 million yuan) turned the final split into a national news moment everyone could calculate.
  • It adapted a cultural template — collecting blessings at New Year — instead of importing a foreign mechanic, so the game explained itself.
  • It was measurable and self-funding: 324.5 billion interactions in one night, and sponsorship revenue above the 268.8 million yuan outlay.

What it did

790,000 users completed the set and split 215 million yuan (271.66 yuan each). 'Xiuyixiu' interactions reached 324.5 billion on New Year's Eve — 29.5 times the previous gala's total — and sponsorship revenue exceeded the 268.8 million yuan Alipay had paid for the partnership, making the event profitable. In 2017 participation rose, the red-packet budget passed 200 million yuan, and partner apps saw measurable lifts: Youku doubled transactions, DingTalk gained 4 million users, and SPD Bank's service window added 20 million followers.

What you can take

Add one scarce element to a ritual people already perform: scarcity turns a giveaway into a social game that produces the behavior the business needs — here, friend links inside a payments app.

Since then

集五福 became an annual Spring Festival fixture and a 'new year custom' in its own right, upgraded year after year with AR scanning, partner-brand cards and new rare-card twists. Competitors and consumer brands copied the collect-and-swap format for holidays and product launches. Alipay's own leadership kept treating it as the flagship New Year campaign, and it remains the standard reference point for gamified festival marketing in China.
