Philips sells only refurbished goods for the holidays — 'Refurb' wins Cannes Grand Prix

Philips sold only refurbished products during the holidays as 'Better Than New' — 52,000 items sold, and a Cannes 2024 Grand Prix for LePub.

创意是什么Flip 'new equals better': sell returned products as a 'Refurb Edition' line with a two-year warranty — and shut new-product sales so refurb is the only choice.伤筋动骨

当时的题目

Each year more than 10 million returned gifts end up in landfill, because for many companies producing new is cheaper than opening, checking, repacking and reshipping returns. Philips had a refurbished range with a two-year warranty, but consumers still defaulted to 'new is better'.

它是怎么成立的

Every holiday season, millions of returned gifts end up in landfill: in 2023 an estimated 50 million gifts were returned across the EU, over 10 million of them discarded, because for many companies making something new is cheaper than opening, checking, repacking and reshipping a return. Philips wanted to expose that hidden e-waste problem — and sell its way out of it.

The answer was 'Better Than New'. LePub Amsterdam, with TOILETPAPER's Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari, refreshed Philips' vintage advertising archive into a retro-future visual language, and positioned returned products as an exclusive Refurb Edition line with the same two-year warranty as new goods. On Earth Day 2023 Philips shut its website to new products entirely — the only way to buy was refurbished — and kept suspending new sales until every refurbished item sold out.

The campaign made the waste visible: a virtual display of returned gifts appeared in Berlin, transforming what could have been a landfill into an interactive digital store where visitors could buy refurbished gifts. In a key market, one in three Germans already preferred receiving second-hand gifts, giving the idea cultural tailwind.

The result was the fastest promotion in Philips history: 52,000 returned items sold, 185 tons of e-waste prevented and an estimated 277 tons of CO2 emissions avoided — and no Philips products ended up in landfills. In June 2024 the work won the Creative Business Transformation Grand Prix at Cannes Lions, with the jury noting its scale set a benchmark for the industry.

妙在哪

  • It changed the sales model, not just the message — for a period, refurbished was the only option.
  • TOILETPAPER's retro-future visuals made sustainability playful and premium instead of solemn.
  • A two-year warranty made 'better than new' a defensible claim, not just a slogan.
  • Making waste visible in Berlin turned an abstract problem into an experience people could visit.

做出来什么

The promotion became the fastest in Philips history: 52,000 returned items sold, 185 tons of e-waste prevented and an estimated 277 tons of CO2 avoided, with no Philips products ending up in landfill. It won the Creative Business Transformation Grand Prix at Cannes Lions 2024.

可以借走的

When the category default is the obstacle, change the offer, not just the argument — make the sustainable choice the only choice for a moment, and people discover they like it.

后来

Philips kept the Refurb Edition line as a standing part of its European offer, with Germany as the lead market, and the Cannes 2024 jury cited the initiative's scale as an industry benchmark for circular commerce. The refurbishment program continued to report avoided e-waste in the company's sustainability communications.
