Nintendo Alarmo (2024) turns waking up into a game with a radar sensor
A camera-free radar sensor snoozes the alarm with a wave and stops it only when you leave bed, wrapping game soundscapes around the morning routine.

当时的题目
Nintendo's research into radio-wave sensors — camera-free, usable in the dark, working through duvets — pointed at the bedroom. The team wanted to 'support people during their sleep,' and after years of prototypes settled on reinventing the alarm clock, the device everyone dreads each morning.
它是怎么成立的
Nintendo's project did not begin as an alarm clock. An in-house research effort on radio-wave motion sensors found a sensor that measures distance and speed through reflected waves — no camera, works in the dark, sees through duvets. Because it protects privacy, the team thought it could fit a bedroom, and the stated theme became 'support people during their sleep.' It took years of prototypes before the alarm clock emerged as the product.
The breakthrough was software: programmers built a system that detects roughly where a person lies on the bed from the sensor's distance and angle, so the moment of getting in or out of bed became readable. That unlocked the product's signature idea — an alarm that you snooze with a wave and that stops only when you leave the bed — plus playful touches like sound effects that rise in pitch when you move and a fanfare when you get up.
Developers Tamori (software-side producer, ex-Splatoon) and Akama (hardware director) made cross-department teamwork the story of the project: hardware, system software and application teams worked together, and a stuck development period was broken by a week of free prototyping. The final red round clock was deliberately chosen to look instantly recognizable as an alarm clock, and 35 scenes across five games make each morning feel like entering a game world.
妙在哪
- Matched a camera-free radar sensor to a private space — the bedroom — instead of forcing it into gaming
- Made the physical act of leaving bed the off switch, turning a chore into a small game mechanic
- Chose a shape instantly readable as an alarm clock, so novelty didn't confuse customers
- Kept the alarm's core promise (you actually get up) while adding joy on top
- Documented the design journey in an Ask the Developer interview, making the idea itself the story
做出来什么
Alarmo launched 9 October 2024 for Nintendo Switch Online members at $99.99, with scenes from Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 3, Pikmin 4 and Ring Fit Adventure, plus sleep-movement records and sleepy sounds. The developer interviews became an event of their own — The Verge covered the boxy gray prototypes — and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Animal Crossing: New Horizons scenes followed as free updates.
可以借走的
Start with a sensor nobody knew what to do with, then aim at a hated daily ritual: iterate until the tech makes 'stop when you leave bed' feel magical, not gimmicky.
后来
Alarmo hit retail in early 2025 at $99.99 after its Switch Online early-access run, and Nintendo expanded its scene library with free Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Animal Crossing: New Horizons updates. The Ask the Developer interview ran to four parts, and the prototypes it revealed — a boxy gray clock with a dot-matrix display, then a dial-based pedestal design — drew wide coverage as an unusually open look at Nintendo hardware development.
