Nikka strips its whisky labels — 'No Labels' wins Japan's first ADFEST 2026 Lotus Grande
Dentsu Tokyo builds the campaign on subtraction: no name, no price, no label — only the whisky; sales up 112%

当时的题目
Founded in 1934 and acclaimed overseas, Nikka Whisky stayed little known at home. Japan's market split into premium bottles bought for the name and mass-market bottles bought for the price, so the label did all the talking before the first taste.
它是怎么成立的
Nikka Whisky, founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, was acclaimed internationally but remained little known in Japan. The domestic market split into premium bottles bought for the name and mass-market bottles bought for the price — in both cases the label did the talking before the first taste.
Dentsu Tokyo's 'No Labels' put a sharper question in its place: what defines a great whisky — the name or the price? Their answer was to remove both. Labels came off bottles, posters, the brand book and the films, not as a one-off stunt but as the campaign's entire design language.
With the name gone, the craft had to carry that weight alone: typography, and the depth of black behind each frame, performed the work the label once did. The subtraction extended to people — drinkers were shot as silhouettes stripped of age, gender and status, refusing the assumption that a whisky drinker is a particular kind of person.
The idea then moved into physical space with THE NIKKA WHISKY TOKYO flagship, built in the same stripped-back language. The venue generated media exposure worth roughly JPY 3.8 million a day, lifted brand image by 524.5% and raised sales by 112%. ADFEST 2026 gave the work the Print & Outdoor Craft Lotus Grande — Japan's first Lotus Grande — plus two Design Lotus Golds.
妙在哪
- It turned a real weakness — low domestic awareness despite international acclaim — into the creative brief.
- Removing the label forced the craft itself to carry the brand, making restraint the message.
- Silhouettes stripped of age, gender and status widened who a whisky drinker could be in a market full of assumptions.
- The flagship carried the idea from print into a lived brand experience, tying creativity to a measurable sales lift.
做出来什么
Sales up 112%, brand image up 524.5%, and the flagship generated media exposure worth roughly JPY 3.8 million a day; ADFEST 2026 awarded it the Print & Outdoor Craft Lotus Grande, Japan's first, plus two Design Lotus Golds.
可以借走的
When a brand's own name is a liability, subtraction beats addition: removing status markers forces the product to carry the message, and the restraint itself reads as premium confidence.
后来
The campaign's numbers — 112% sales growth, a 524.5% brand-image lift, and flagship media exposure worth roughly JPY 3.8 million a day — came from applying the same stripped-back language to a physical store. ADFEST 2026 crowned No Labels the Print & Outdoor Craft Lotus Grande, Japan's first, plus two Design Lotus Golds, and it became the reference point for dentsu's subtraction-based brand strategy in Japan.
