In August 2005, 21-year-old Alex Tew faced a familiar problem: university was a month away and his bank account was overdrawn. Instead of a loan, he spent one night asking himself how to become a millionaire, and answered in 20 minutes — sell one million pixels of advertising space on a website for $1 each.
With $100 he bought a domain and hosting, and put the site up in two days. The first 1,000 pixels were bought by family and friends so the grid would not look empty, and he used that money to send press releases to his local Wiltshire media. The story — 'broke student sells pixels' — was picked up by UK papers, then by bloggers, forums and media in 35 countries.
The mechanics stayed deliberately simple: businesses bought 10×10 blocks at $1 a pixel and placed a logo linking back to their site. Within two weeks he had $40,000; within five months every pixel was sold, the last 1,000 going for $38,100 on eBay. A $100 weekend project had grossed over a million dollars — and had become one of the internet's most copied advertising stunts.

Tew deferred his degree, ran the site for years and later built it into a still-live relic of early web culture. The idea spawned clones — pixel-selling sites, the 'Billion Dollar' pages, and ad-grid stunts — and was revived repeatedly (a 2006 relaunch sold a fresh grid at $1 a pixel). He donated part of the proceeds to a youth enterprise charity that had once loaned him £3,500, and the page remains online today as the original mosaic.
