当时的题目

McFries are an icon in Malaysia: fans dig through the bag for the last fry, swipe them off friends' trays, and drop by McDonald's just for them. Yet for decades fries stayed the default side dish, and there was no official way to enjoy them as a full meal. The brand asked what fans had always implied: what's stopping fries from being the main, if they're so good?

它是怎么成立的

In Malaysia, McDonald's fries are not a side dish in the cultural sense: fans dig through the bag for the last fry, swipe them off friends' trays and drop by the restaurant just for the golden sticks. The brand saw an obsession without an official channel — no way to enjoy McFries as a full meal. The creative question came from Leo Burnett's associate creative director Jay Loh: what's stopping fries from being the main, if they're so good?

The answer was a world first: the Fans Fries Meal, a meal that started with fries and ended with fries, with XXL fries as the centrepiece alongside a drink and a side. Priced at RM10 and available nationwide from 11 to 13 July, it launched on International French Fry Day. The night before, McDonald's took over Bukit Bintang — home of its first Malaysian store and its 2022 Fries Crosswalk — with a synchronised digital out-of-home display that bathed the Golden Triangle in golden fry visuals, then converged on the main screen above the Bukit Bintang outlet to reveal the meal.

The strategy was built on three pillars: cultural timing on French Fry Day, location dominance in KL's Golden Triangle, and integrated engagement across social, paid media, ground-level activations and even hijacking its own ads. The result was 80,000 meals sold — selling out in two days — plus RM6.4 million in earned media and 35 million global impressions. At the Kancil Awards 2025, the campaign took the Golden Kancil, the show's single best-of-show award, for Leo Malaysia.

妙在哪

  • It turns an existing love into an official product rather than inventing new demand — fries fans got the meal they always wanted.
  • The insight is simple and undeniable: the most-loved item on the menu had been stuck as a side for decades.
  • The launch made the city the medium, turning Bukit Bintang's Golden Triangle golden in a synchronised DOOH takeover.
  • It won Malaysia's Golden Kancil, the region's best-of-show recognition for a purely local creative idea.

可以借走的

Look at the love that already exists and give it an official form. Making a beloved side dish the main course is a product decision, not a new message — the launch itself becomes the spectacle.

后来

The Fans Fries Meal became part of McDonald's Malaysia's French Fry Day tradition, which had already produced the 2022 Fries Crosswalk and the 2023 KL Tower fry projection. The 2025 Golden Kancil made Leo Malaysia the winner of best of show two years running, after Heineken's Hidden in Plain Sight in 2024. The meal returned in 2026 with another Bukit Bintang spectacle, confirming that the all-fries format had become a recurring platform rather than a one-off stunt.
