Maggi turns 'emergency hunger' into 'emotional hunger' — Grand Effie India 2025

After Maggi's first sales decline since 2015, McCann rebuilt it as the feeling behind six Indian moods — rain, gossip, chai, mountains — reversing the slide.

创意是什么Stop selling Maggi as an emergency meal; recast it as the taste of emotional moments — rain, gossip, mountains, chai — so craving, not convenience, drives frequency.伤筋动骨

当时的题目

Maggi had unmatched penetration in India, but households were cooking it less often; in a world of delivery apps, convenience had become the baseline, so its old rescue positioning no longer made the brand special.

它是怎么成立的

Maggi is arguably India's most-loved food brand, yet it recently faced its first sales decline since 2015. Penetration was unmatched, but people were reaching for Maggi less often. McCann India's diagnosis: the brand had built its legacy on rescue moments — late nights, empty fridges, quick fixes — but in an always-available world of delivery apps, rescue is no longer special. Convenience had become the baseline.

The strategy was to move Maggi from emergency hunger to emotional hunger. Rather than inventing new occasions, McCann decoded moods that already run through Indian life — after a fight, during exams, on rainy evenings, in hostel rooms, on train journeys — and built six 'worlds of feeling' around them: the spice of gossip, the mood of the mountains (pahaadon waali Maggi), the spirit of Sundays, the rescuer from office blues, the feel of the rain, and the partner to chai.

Every execution was tied back to one KPI: increasing frequency per household, so an emotional world was only pursued if it mapped to a tangible consumption trigger. The result: consumption occasions rose, volume declines reversed, and Maggi delivered its highest-ever annual sales. The campaign won the Grand Effie at the 25th Effie India Awards 2025, with Nestlé India named Effie Client of the Year.

妙在哪

  • The insight was a real business problem — declining frequency, not awareness — so every creative decision could be measured.
  • Instead of one big ad, the team orchestrated multiple emotional moments, building a repeatable memory system rather than a one-off spike.
  • The worlds came from existing culture (rain, chai, hill stations), so the campaign felt like life, not marketing.
  • Discipline: any emotion that couldn't map to a measurable consumption trigger was dropped.

做出来什么

Consumption occasions increased, volume declines reversed, and Maggi posted its highest-ever annual sales; the work won the Grand Effie at the 25th Effie India Awards 2025, where Nestlé India was named Client of the Year.

可以借走的

When convenience becomes the category baseline, grow by standing for a feeling. Decode moods a culture already has, and tie every activation to a behaviour you can measure.

后来

The campaign established a durable platform for Maggi rather than a one-off push: the 'worlds of feeling' continued to roll out across India through 2026, and the work was recognised at Kyoorius 2026 as well. Inside McCann and Nestlé, it became a reference case for turning emotional relevance into measurable frequency gains.
