LG's StanbyME Go (2023): a 27-inch battery TV in a briefcase you can watch anywhere
LG turned the TV into luggage: a 27-inch touchscreen, battery and speakers built into a rugged briefcase that opens anywhere.
LG Electronics
当时的题目
LG built premium OLEDs for fixed living rooms, but content viewing was moving outside the home; the brief was to rethink where and how a TV could be used.
它是怎么成立的
In August 2023 LG brought the StanbyME Go to the US: a 27-inch 1080p touchscreen TV, built-in battery, and 20W four-speaker sound system all housed inside a large, rugged briefcase that also stores the remote and power cable. It runs LG's webOS with the full streaming-app lineup, supports AirPlay and screen mirroring, and was priced at $999.99, sold only through LG's own website.
The creative core is the form factor. The screen mounts on an articulating arm inside the case, so it can stand in landscape for movies, rotate to portrait for social feeds, or lie flat in 'table mode' for touchscreen games and music. The case itself is MIL-STD-810H tested against shock, temperature, dust, low pressure and vibration, and the display auto-powers down when the case is latched. LG's pitch: a full TV that goes to a picnic, camping trip or tailgate without an outlet.
Reaction was immediate and unusually warm for a TV. The Verge's announcement called it 'quirky, one-of-a-kind,' its IFA hands-on found it 'as sturdy as it is bizarre,' and its full review concluded that the world needs more gadgets like it — while noting the $1,200 price and 28-pound weight would keep it a niche curiosity rather than a mainstream hit. Reviewers placed it inside a broader 'lifestyle TV' wave, but singled it out as the boldest rethinking of what a TV is.
The idea's staying power: even critics who couldn't recommend buying it praised the concept and hoped LG would iterate. The StanbyME Go proved a TV could be treated as a mobile object, not a fixed appliance, without adding a single new display technology.
妙在哪
- It relocated an everyday object instead of inventing new tech: the screen, battery and speakers already existed, the briefcase is what made them a new product.
- The case solved the real objection to portable screens — damage, cables, accessories — by making protection and storage part of the product itself.
- Multiple physical modes (landscape, portrait, flat) answered different real contexts, not just marketing slides.
- The bold, almost playful concept stood out in a category that rarely surprises, which is why outlets covered it at all.
做出来什么
Became the surprise conversation piece of IFA 2023 and got widely reviewed as the year's most delightfully odd gadget; The Verge called it 'the most Inspector Gadget thing I've ever reviewed' and said the world needs more gadgets like it.
可以借走的
A new category can come from relocating an old device: re-engineer form, protection and inputs around a new context, and answer 'where do I use this?' — novelty with coherence makes people talk.
后来
LG continued the StanbyME line as part of its 'lifestyle screen' push, and the Go became the most talked-about example of portable TVs. Reviewers said it proved the concept even while the price and weight kept it niche; no direct competitor matched the briefcase idea in the years after, leaving it a memorable one-off bet on where TVs could go.
