Lenovo's rollable ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 grows its 14-inch OLED to 16.7 inches on demand

A motor-driven OLED unrolls inside the ThinkBook Plus Gen 6, expanding its screen from 14 to 16.7 inches — about 50% more workspace in the same footprint.

当时的题目

Professionals had to choose between a portable laptop and enough screen to work on. Lenovo had shown a rollable concept two years earlier; its UXD team joined early workshops in 2024 to pin down when and how vertical expansion would actually help people work.

它是怎么成立的

For years the laptop was a fixed trade-off: the more screen, the heavier the bag. Lenovo's answer, unveiled at CES 2025, was the ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 Rollable, described by the company as the world's first rollable-display AI PC. A flexible OLED panel hidden inside the chassis unrolls vertically when the user presses a key or makes a hand gesture, growing the display from 14 to 16.7 inches and adding split-screen and virtual-display workspace.

The machine began as a concept Lenovo had shown two years earlier, and turning it into a product was an experience-design problem as much as an engineering one. Lenovo's UXD team joined early workshops in 2024 to define real user scenarios before engineering decisions were locked: when vertical expansion actually improves productivity, how fast the roll must feel to avoid seeming mechanical, and what interaction model is intuitive on first use. They helped shape requirements for interaction logic, mechanical timing, and safety thresholds, with coding and multitasking as reference workloads.

The result shipped at US$3,499 in 2025, with reviewers framing it as a laptop 'that can make itself grow' and second monitors becoming optional. Lenovo's Chief Experience Officer wrote that the rollable platform was not a one-off: insights from the first product fed directly into the 2026 ThinkPad Rollable XD and Legion Pro Rollable concepts, each refining how an expanding display should work in real workflows.

妙在哪

  • It refused the portability-versus-screen-size trade-off that every laptop buyer accepts, making the screen itself the elastic variable.
  • UXD was involved before engineering decisions were locked, so speed, timing, and reliability were designed into the product rather than bolted on.
  • The vertical expansion maps to concrete work: more spreadsheet rows, more code lines, and split-screen multitasking without a second monitor.
  • It moved from a public concept to a shipping product in two years, showing the company would carry a bold hardware idea through to market.

做出来什么

Unveiled at CES 2025 as the world's first rollable-display laptop at US$3,499, it shipped in 2025; Lenovo's design leadership says the platform then evolved into the 2026 ThinkPad Rollable XD and Legion Pro Rollable concepts, carrying the vertical-screen idea into a product family.

可以借走的

Don't make users choose between portability and screen size — make the screen itself elastic. Design the interaction (speed, timing, reliability) together with the hardware.

后来

The ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 went on sale in 2025 as the first commercial rollable laptop, and Lenovo kept investing in the form factor: at CES 2026 it showed the ThinkPad Rollable XD Concept, which routes the display around the back of the lid for a glanceable outside screen, and the Legion Pro Rollable Concept with a 24-inch horizontal expansion for esports — evidence that feedback from the first product shaped the next generation. Whether rollable screens become mainstream remains open; the idea has moved from prototype to product family.
