LEGO's Play with Braille set (2023) turns brick studs into braille letters

Each brick's studs form a braille letter with the printed character below, so blind and sighted kids build and learn together on equal terms.

创意是什么Mold braille letters into ordinary LEGO brick studs, printed characters underneath, fully compatible with every set — so braille becomes family play, not a special tool.伤筋动骨

当时的题目

As audiobooks and screens spread, fewer blind children were learning braille, and advocates warned of a literacy cliff. LEGO was asked to make its best-known toy teach braille through play.

它是怎么成立的

The idea came from outside: in 2011 the Danish Association of the Blind proposed braille LEGO bricks to the LEGO Foundation, and Brazil's Dorina Nowill Foundation re-raised it in 2017. The pitch was simple — fewer blind children were learning braille as audiobooks and screens took over, and advocates saw literacy vanishing. LEGO's answer was to mold each brick's studs into a braille letter, with the printed character below, fully compatible with every other LEGO brick.

Prototypes went to Denmark, Brazil, the UK and Norway in 2019; from 2020 the LEGO Foundation gave free educational kits to organizations in six languages across seven countries. The reception was so loud — lead designer Rasmus Løgstrup says they were 'inundated with thousands of requests' — that the LEGO Group put the set on sale to the public for the first time in August 2023, starting with English and French.

The design detail is the point: because the studs spell braille while a printed letter sits underneath, blind children can feel the letters while sighted siblings, parents and classmates read them — everyone plays on equal terms. From 1 September 2023 the 287-piece Play with Braille set shipped for $89.99, and Italian, German and Spanish followed in early 2024.

妙在哪

  • Diagnosed the real problem: braille literacy was collapsing, not just 'blind kids need toys'
  • Put the braille alphabet on the studs and the printed character below, so blind and sighted players share the same object
  • Kept full compatibility with every LEGO set, so the learning tool joined ordinary play instead of being a separate aid
  • Went from a 2011 proposal to prototypes, free school kits, then retail — evidence-driven, not a stunt

做出来什么

The first retail sets sold from 1 September 2023 ($89.99), with Italian, German and Spanish following in early 2024, after kits had already reached six languages across seven countries. Families began learning braille together at home, and LEGO made Audio & Braille building instructions a permanent offering from 2024.

可以借走的

Re-tool the toy everyone already owns: braille studs on standard LEGO bricks kept full compatibility, so a 'special' learning aid felt ordinary and shared — and ordinariness is what made it inclusive.

后来

Play with Braille expanded into Italian, German and Spanish in early 2024, and LEGO made Audio & Braille building instructions a permanent product line. The World Blind Union called the wider availability 'a massive step forward' for braille literacy; the concept also grew into The Braille Program, a 2024 social enterprise that trains practitioners to run the bricks in more countries.
