KFC China makes Genshin fans shout a cringe code for badges — the shame sells the meal
To earn a limited badge, Genshin fans had to shout a cringe code line at the KFC counter — public embarrassment became the meme: 120M Weibo reads, 20x sales.

当时的题目
KFC China had run 30+ game tie-ins, but Genshin — five months old with 874 million dollars in mobile revenue alone — had a huge, mostly-male anime fanbase that stayed silent on Weibo. With offline anime events cancelled by the pandemic, the collab needed to turn game fans into store traffic and shareable content.
它是怎么成立的
In March 2021, miHoYo's open-world hit Genshin Impact and KFC China launched one of the year's most talked-about game-brand tie-ins. Genshin was already enormous — roughly 874 million dollars in mobile revenue in its first five months — but its mostly-male anime fanbase stayed quiet on Weibo while living on Bilibili, so the fandom's real size was invisible to social media. KFC China, which had run more than 30 game collaborations across 6,600+ stores, was looking for a way to convert that silent enthusiasm into store traffic and shareable content.
The mechanics were ordinary; the ritual was not. A 59-yuan 'Genshin Teyvat Bucket' came with an exclusive in-game glider and items, and at 16 themed stores players who said the catchphrase '异世相遇,尽享美味' ('meet in another world, enjoy the meal') at the counter could earn one of only 90 pairs of limited badges per day. Fans camped overnight, queued in the hundreds, dressed up, and filmed themselves performing the embarrassing line — a moment the community quickly named 'social death', and the discomfort became the content.
The result was a loop the brand barely had to pay for: the Weibo hashtag passed 120 million reads and 47,000 discussions, fan-made videos drew millions of plays on Bilibili, KFC reported roughly 20x sales growth on the meal, its app hit a year-high download rank and crashed on 11 March under demand. Badges resold for up to 300 yuan, people hired others to eat the fried chicken just to keep the collectible bucket, and the organizers planned a second wave of gifts. 36氪 called it the most successful game-brand collaboration of 2021 so far.
The campaign's real output was a ritual: it gave a silent fandom a sanctioned, awkward, filmable reason to show itself in public, and turned 6,600 fast-food counters into offline social venues during a pandemic that had cancelled the community's usual events.
妙在哪
- The required catchphrase turned every purchase into a performance — the act itself was the content, filmed and shared by the fans.
- Scarcity did the marketing: 90 badge pairs per store per day made the collab a hunt rather than a purchase.
- It gave a silent fandom a legitimate reason to be visible, releasing years of enthusiasm that had never shown up on mainstream social platforms.
- KFC's 6,600-store network made the ritual physically accessible across the country, converting online fandom into offline footfall.
做出来什么
#原神肯德基# logged 120 million reads and 47,000 discussions on Weibo; fan videos hit millions of plays on Bilibili. KFC saw roughly 20x sales growth on the meal, its app reached a year-high download rank and crashed on 11 March; badges resold for up to 300 yuan and even the empty buckets were scalped — and in some places stolen.
可以借走的
Give the audience a small public ritual with a required embarrassing act, and fans will film it themselves: the 'social death' supplied the meme, so users made the campaign's content free.
后来
The success forced organizers to plan a second wave of gifts and peripherals, and 36氪 crowned it 2021's most successful game-brand tie-in so far. The campaign capped a playbook KFC China had built with 阴阳师 and 明日方舟, cementing the chain as the default partner for anime-game IPs; analysts contrasted its ritual mechanic with McDonald's 'happy sister' mascot, which drew mockery instead of memes. The 'say the code in public' scene remains a reference moment in Chinese game-marketing retrospectives, and bucket-resale stories became part of its legend.
