Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ultra cuts luxury bottles to 180g — Pentawards 2025 Platinum

Five years of glass experiments let Blue Label Ultra weigh 180g — the world's lightest 70cl whisky bottle — and win Pentawards 2025 Platinum.

创意是什么Question the equation of luxury with weight: shrink a premium whisky bottle to 180g via a handblown teardrop shape, then give the patent away royalty-free.伤筋动骨

当时的题目

Diageo's design team watched luxury categories like eyewear and high-performance cycling move towards lightness and asked whether spirits could follow. The brief became a dare: make one of Johnnie Walker's most premium whiskies the world's lightest 70cl glass bottle — without losing the iconic square identity.

它是怎么成立的

For decades, heavy glass signalled luxury in spirits: the weight of a bottle was part of the status it sold. Johnnie Walker's global design director Jeremy Lindley came out of an ideation session about the future of luxury convinced the opposite was coming — eyewear and high-performance cycling were already moving towards delicate, light design — and asked whether the whisky industry could follow.

The team took that vision to expert glassmakers and spent five years in a test-and-learn process. The breakthrough was a hand-blown teardrop shape: the lightest, strongest bottle possible, which for the first time reformed Johnnie Walker's iconic square form while still echoing it. Engineering followed the geometry — a protective cage for the round base, a lattice stopper, a bamboo frame, and hand-filling each bottle to avoid production damage. A new Blue Label blend by Master Blender Dr Emma Walker, using rare ghost whiskies, matched the bottle's rarity.

The result, Blue Label Ultra, weighs 180g without the closure — the world's lightest 70cl Scotch whisky glass bottle, in a limited run of 888 at a suggested price of £1,000. Unveiled at London Design Festival 2024 and later awarded Pentawards 2025 Platinum in Beverages, it also carried a bigger bet: Diageo took out UK Patent GB2616831 B and offered royalty-free licences to anyone, so the lightweighting knowledge could move the whole industry rather than just its own range.

妙在哪

  • It inverted a category rule — luxury equals weight — and made lightness the premium signal, a reframe no rival could ignore.
  • Five years of test-and-learn with external glassmakers treated the impossible as an engineering problem rather than a marketing claim.
  • The teardrop shape preserved brand recognition while breaking the square-bottle tradition, so the innovation still read as Johnnie Walker.
  • Offering the patent royalty-free converted a one-off design stunt into an industry contribution and proof of the brand's 'Spirit of Progress'.

做出来什么

Unveiled at London Design Festival 2024 with a Marshmallow Laser Feast installation, the bottle won Pentawards 2025 Platinum in Beverages. Diageo secured UK Patent GB2616831 B and — a first for the company — offered royalty-free licences to anyone, while applying the lightweighting learnings across its wider portfolio.

可以借走的

Challenge the category's received wisdom head-on: where heft equalled prestige, lightness became the proof of craft — and sharing the patent turned an experiment into industry progress.

后来

Blue Label Ultra became a reference point in premium packaging: Pentawards 2025 gave it Platinum in Beverages, with jury commentary framing it as a standard for light-weighting across the industry. Diageo applied the research to lightweighting projects across its portfolio and released the 888-bottle run in selected markets in 2025. The open patent remained the distinctive legacy: instead of guarding the discovery, Johnnie Walker invited competitors to license it free, positioning the project as a step toward lower-carbon packaging for the whole sector.
