当时的题目
Huggies needed to convince South African moms its nappies are best for very mobile babies — on a small budget, without a conventional big-budget TV spot.
它是怎么成立的
Huggies had a benefit moms didn't believe: that its nappies keep up with very active babies. Ogilvy Johannesburg's 'The World's First Baby Marathon' made the claim visible instead of saying it. Using specially created tracking technology, four South African babies aged 7 to 11 months wore Huggies fitted with movement sensors, and their crawling was turned into a real-time 21km online race from their own homes — the world's first baby marathon.
The campaign rested on a research insight: babies move far more than parents realise, over 3km a day according to New York University. Rather than filming a serious documentary-style experiment, Ogilvy deliberately framed the data as entertainment, editing the babies' progress into a warm, funny web-film series so people actually wanted to watch a crawl that took days. With a small budget compared with traditional big-budget TV commercials, the novelty — babies racing a marathon in real time — generated attention by itself.
The result was measurable: a direct lift in Huggies sales of 28.9% and a return on investment of 29 to 1, according to Ogilvy South Africa. The work won the 2018 Loeries Grand Prix in Film Communication, campaign golds in the Data Driven and Integrated Campaign categories, and four AMASA Media Innovation golds — becoming proof that data-driven storytelling could sell nappies, not just win applause.
妙在哪
- The product's core benefit — staying comfortable while babies move — became the entire entertainment format.
- A small budget forced earned attention instead of paid reach, and the novelty made the campaign newsworthy.
- Real-time movement data gave the campaign an authenticity a scripted ad can't fake; people watched a genuine experiment.
- The warm, funny framing matched the Huggies brand and made a scientific exercise feel like family entertainment.
做出来什么
Direct lift in Huggies sales of 28.9% and a 29:1 return on investment; won the 2018 Loeries Grand Prix in Film Communication plus campaign golds in data-driven and integrated categories.
可以借走的
A product truth can become the format: babies move a lot, so make the movement the show. When the demonstration is the entertainment, the ad sells the benefit instead of claiming it.
后来
The Baby Marathon anchored a standout awards year for Ogilvy Johannesburg — the agency took 11 Loeries in 2018, with the campaign collecting the Film Grand Prix, campaign golds in data-driven and integrated work, and craft awards — plus four AMASA golds. In South Africa it became the rare diaper campaign that moved the sales needle rather than just the industry, and a reference point for data-driven FMCG storytelling on modest budgets.
