Columbia dares flat-Earthers to find the edge of the Earth — and win the company
CEO Tim Boyle's open-letter dare to photograph the planet's edge earned 80M people and a Cannes 2026 Grand Prix — nobody found it
Columbia Sportswear
当时的题目
Columbia's gear is positioned as tough enough for the most extreme conditions on Earth, but 'durable' is a tired claim. The brand needed a way to dramatize the edge that people would argue about for free.
它是怎么成立的
Columbia Sportswear builds gear for the edges of the Earth, but 'we make tough jackets' is an easy claim to ignore. So the brand, with adam&eve\TBWA, turned durability into a thought experiment: if the planet really had an edge, would the gear survive a trip to find it?
CEO Tim Boyle published an open letter in The New York Times daring the flat-Earth community to find the edge of the planet and photograph it — anyone who succeeded would receive everything owned by the company. A hero film, inventory breakdown videos and outdoor ads spelled out the prize, while the brand joined Reddit threads and YouTube comment sections to keep the argument alive.
Nobody found the edge of the Earth. But hundreds of people sent in theories, maps and attempts, and the stunt earned roughly 80 million people in audience and 10 million organic views. It became the most-awarded marketing campaign in Columbia's history, took a Grand Clio, and won the Brand Experience & Activation Grand Prix at Cannes Lions 2026.
妙在哪
- The provocation was inherently shareable: a billion-dollar company wagered on a physics question.
- It dramatized the product claim — gear built for extremes — without ever showing a jacket being tested.
- The brand actively joined the argument instead of launching the stunt and walking away, extending the news cycle.
- The prize framing converted skeptics into the campaign's loudest promoters: flat-Earthers debated it everywhere.
- The whole execution was cheap relative to its reach — letters, film, social seeding — no media plan could buy 80 million earned impressions.
做出来什么
Roughly 80 million earned audience and 10 million organic views; hundreds of submissions of theories, maps and attempts from around the world. The campaign became the most-awarded marketing drive in Columbia's history, took a Grand Clio, and won the 2026 Cannes Lions Brand Experience & Activation Grand Prix.
可以借走的
A dare is stronger than a demo: instead of showing gear surviving extremes, Columbia made the claim the premise of a global argument, and let skeptics and believers do the promotion.
后来
Boyle officially closed the campaign in August 2026 with a final spot reflecting on the hundreds of attempts, joking that he was relieved to keep the company and asking people to stop emailing. The campaign went on to win the Grand Clio and the Cannes Lions 2026 Brand Experience & Activation Grand Prix, cementing it as the most awarded marketing drive in Columbia's history.
