Boox Palma puts an E Ink screen in a phone-sized body — friction becomes the feature

By 2023 the e-reader had lost the argument that mattered most: which device goes in your pocket. The phone was always there, and it could read too — it just also had TikTok, Instagram and notifications. Onyx Boox's answer was not a better screen or a smarter app, but a geometry trick: build an e-reader the exact size and shape of a phone, run the exact same Android apps on it, and swap only the screen.

The Palma launched in autumn 2023 at about $280: a 6.13-inch E Ink Carta 1200 panel at 300 ppi, Android 11 with the Google Play Store, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a body barely larger than a current flagship phone. Every app you already own — Kindle, Readwise, Obsidian, Spotify, Pocket Casts — installs and works. A notification mute silences the interruptions, volume buttons flip pages, and the battery lasts anywhere from four days to a week.

The design's real move is what it leaves in: E Ink's slow refresh and monochrome rendering mean the Palma can technically play YouTube and scroll Instagram, but the experience is bad enough that nobody wants to. The Verge's David Pierce, after months of use, said it changed his habits: reading and listening moved off his phone, and "a device that can technically do everything but only makes it easy to do the stuff I want" was exactly what he needed. Writer Craig Mod called it "the absolute perfect amount of friction."

That friction is the product. Boox did not invent new hardware tricks — it reused the phone's form factor, Android's app ecosystem, and E Ink's well-known weaknesses, and reassigned those weaknesses as the feature. The result: a device praised not for what it adds but for what it makes hard.
