Apple turns AirPods Pro 2 into a clinical-grade hearing aid with a free software update
A five-minute at-home hearing test plus a free AirPods Pro 2 update turns the earbuds into an FDA-cleared OTC hearing aid — no clinic visit needed.

当时的题目

它是怎么成立的
Hearing loss is everywhere and mostly untreated: the WHO counts 1.5 billion people living with it, and Apple's Hearing Study found 75 percent of people diagnosed with hearing loss go untreated — often because professional hearing aids are expensive, stigmatized, and require a clinic visit. Apple's answer, announced on September 9, 2024, was not a new device but a free software update for AirPods Pro 2.
The end-to-end hearing health experience combines active Hearing Protection; a scientifically validated Hearing Test based on pure-tone audiometry that users take at home in minutes; and a clinical-grade Hearing Aid feature that uses the resulting personalized hearing profile to boost sounds in real time. Apple's acoustics engineers tuned the features in anechoic chambers and a 50-speaker lab that recreates soundscapes like noisy restaurants, while the Design Studio worked to make the test seamless for people taking their very first hearing test.
The regulatory step made the idea concrete: on September 12, 2024, the FDA authorized the first over-the-counter hearing aid software, the Hearing Aid Feature, after a 118-subject study showed self-fitting achieved similar perceived benefit to professional fitting. The features then shipped as a free update to AirPods Pro 2 in more than 100 countries and regions, turning earbuds millions already owned into a clinical-grade hearing aid.
妙在哪
- It used hardware already in consumers' pockets instead of asking people to buy a separate, stigmatized medical device.
- The at-home test removed the clinic visit — the main barrier for the large share of diagnosed people who go untreated.
- The engineering went deep: anechoic chambers, calibrated real-world soundscapes, and audiologist-run studies made the software credibly clinical.
- Regulatory clearance — the FDA's first-ever OTC hearing aid software — turned a consumer feature into a genuine medical product.
做出来什么
On September 12, 2024, the FDA authorized the first over-the-counter hearing aid software ever, for AirPods Pro; the features shipped as a free update to AirPods Pro 2 in more than 100 countries and regions, giving millions of owners a clinical-grade hearing aid at a consumer price point.
可以借走的
Instead of a new product, ship the medical job as a free software update to hardware people already own — and spend the real effort on validation, clinical study, and making the test feel simple.
后来
The hearing features reached AirPods Pro 2 owners as a free update in fall 2024, part of Apple's broader health push alongside the Apple Watch Noise app and the Apple Hearing Study. Audiologists debated the clinical limits of consumer hearing aids, but the move reset expectations for what audio hardware can do — a US$249 earbud that doubles as a regulated medical device — and put pressure on both the hearing-aid industry and rival consumer audio makers to respond.
