Anthropic's Artifacts free Claude's output from chat into a live side panel you can edit
Claude's generated code, documents, and designs open in a dedicated side window users can see, edit, and build on in real time — turning chat into a workspace.

当时的题目
By mid-2024 AI chatbots could generate impressive code, documents, and designs, but the output lived in a scrolling conversation — impossible to treat like a real, editable file. Launching Claude 3.5 Sonnet, Anthropic used the moment to change the interface itself.
它是怎么成立的
By mid-2024, AI chatbots could generate impressive code, documents, and designs — but the output lived in a scrolling transcript, impossible to treat like a real file. When Anthropic launched Claude 3.5 Sonnet on June 20, 2024, it introduced Artifacts, a new way to use Claude: whenever the model generated content such as code snippets, text documents, or website designs, the result appeared in a dedicated window alongside the conversation.
Anthropic described the design as a dynamic workspace where users could 'see, edit, and build upon Claude's creations in real-time, seamlessly integrating AI-generated content into their projects and workflows.' Design and UX teams could use it to collaboratively create, iterate, and refine interface prototypes; developers could edit generated code without losing the context of the conversation that produced it. The company framed the feature as marking Claude's evolution 'from a conversational AI to a collaborative work environment.'
The idea spread quickly. What began as a web preview for Pro users rolled out to all Claude users — Free, Pro, and Team — and to the iOS and Android apps by late August 2024. Within months, competitors including OpenAI shipped their own side-by-side workspace pattern, turning the artifact panel from an experiment into the default shape of AI chat products.
妙在哪
- It solved a real friction: generated work was unusable while trapped in chat text, so giving output a dedicated surface changed what it could be.
- The workspace kept conversation and artifact together, so iteration stayed in context instead of copying content between apps.
- It was a product-level reframe — from conversational AI to collaborative work environment — not just a toggle on an existing feature.
- It generalized across content types, so designers, developers, and writers each found an immediate use for the same pattern.
做出来什么
Artifacts became Claude's signature feature: it moved from a web preview to general availability across Free, Pro, and Team plans and the iOS and Android apps within months, and rivals such as OpenAI shipped the same side-by-side workspace pattern.
可以借走的
The conversation is not the deliverable. Giving AI output its own editable, persistent surface — instead of letting it scroll away in chat — turns a chatbot into a tool people build with.
后来
Artifacts became a defining Claude feature and part of how Anthropic positioned Claude.ai as a work environment; it was followed by Projects for team knowledge and collaboration. OpenAI shipped its own Canvas workspace in October 2024, Google added similar artifact-style panels, and the 'chat plus workspace' layout became a standard assumption across AI product design.
