Amazon's 2018 letter makes its six-page silent-reading memo the model for meetings

Bezos' 2017 letter explains why Amazon bans slides: six-page narrative memos, silently read at every meeting's start, take a week to write.

创意是什么Replace slide decks with six-page narrative memos that the whole room reads silently first, so meetings argue about substance the author has already thought through.脱胎换骨

当时的题目

By 2018 Amazon had more than 560,000 employees, and Bezos used the annual shareholder letter to explain how the company keeps standards high at that scale — including why it does not do PowerPoint.

它是怎么成立的

In April 2018 Amazon released Jeff Bezos' annual letter to shareowners, and half of it was not about results at all. Instead it argued that high standards are teachable and contagious, then explained the mechanism Amazon uses to keep them: no PowerPoint, no slide decks, only narratively structured six-page memos.

The mechanics became the famous part. Meetings begin with everyone silently reading the memo in what Bezos called a 'study hall'. A great memo takes a week or more: written, rewritten, shared with colleagues asked to improve it, set aside for a few days, then edited again with a fresh mind. By tradition, authors' names never appear on the memo — it belongs to the whole team.

The point was not paperwork for its own sake. Bezos argued that a memo's quality makes the standard visible: readers know a great memo when they see one, and teaching realistic expectations about scope — that this takes a week, not an afternoon — is what makes the standard achievable. The letter itself was filed with the SEC as part of Amazon's 8-K, so the practice was documented in a first-hand corporate record.

妙在哪

  • Slides let authors hide shallow thinking behind bullet points
  • Silent reading gives everyone the same full picture before debate starts
  • A week of rewriting forces the writer to think the problem through
  • Anonymous authorship makes the memo a team product, not a performance

做出来什么

The letter turned an internal ritual into one of the most quoted management passages of the decade: business press repeated the 'six-page memo' line verbatim, and it became shorthand for Amazon's decision culture.

可以借走的

Put the thinking on the page before the meeting: forcing the author to write a full narrative moves the debate from first impressions to substance, and makes quality visible to everyone.

后来

The letter became one of the most-read shareholder documents of its era, and the six-page memo is now a standard topic in books and courses about Amazon's management system. Companies far outside Amazon adopted variants of silent-reading meetings, making it one of the most copied workplace rituals of the past decade.
