What it had to solve
Netflix commissioned a branding package — title sequences, symbol, title cards — for the Untold Stories series, with the studio's stated aim of a stripped-down visual solution that stays both upbeat and elegant.
How it works
Vucko built the title sequences around the pathway motif, set the wordmark in Domaine Display chosen for its 'human, elegant, optimistic' qualities complementing the custom Netflix Sans, drew a symbol in which path and hero become one, and framed title cards as close-ups whose wide negative space maximises type legibility. Production ran through Hornet; music and sound design by Ambrose Yu.
What it did
The package gave the series one coherent system — sequences, symbol, title cards — and was showcased by motion-design publication STASH in August 2021. The material records no viewership or award results.
Background
When Netflix needed a branding package for its Untold Stories series, Toronto designer/director Andrew Vucko proposed a stripped-down system built on a single motif: the pathway. 'In storytelling, all protagonists find themselves on a journey,' he explained — a path 'often filled with twists, turns, and conflict' — and that path became the graphic spine of the entire package.
The first two elements created were the title sequences. For the wordmark, Vucko chose Domaine Display for its 'human, elegant, optimistic' qualities, complementing Netflix's custom typeface Netflix Sans. The symbol reduces the idea to its minimum: 'the path and the hero become the mark.' Title cards were framed as close-ups, their wide negative space maximising the legibility of the type.
Production ran through Hornet, with designers including Stephen Kelleher, Alec Tear and Vini Nascimento, and music and sound design by Ambrose Yu. Motion-design publication STASH featured the package in August 2021, crediting Vucko's 'talent for stripped-down visual solutions' with keeping the show package 'both upbeat and elegant.'
Why it lands
Restrains a streaming title package to one metaphor — the journey — so every element reinforces the show's storytelling premise.
The symbol is a real reduction, not decoration: path plus hero collapse into a single legible mark.
Type choice does emotional work: Domaine Display's warmth keeps a documentary series optimistic rather than grim.
What you can take
One strong metaphor can carry an entire identity package: find the story's spine (the journey), reduce it to a mark, and let every element — type, cards, symbol — restate it.
Since then
The package shipped as the series' on-air identity and was showcased by STASH that August. The material records no awards or measurable outcomes.
