Nature becomes a streaming artist — 'Sounds Right' routes real royalties to conservation

The Museum for the United Nations launches NATURE as an official Spotify artist; fans' streams of her sounds fund conservation projects.

What it had to solve

The music industry pays for human creativity but not for the natural sounds — birdsong, rain, oceans — that appear in recordings; biodiversity keeps losing to extractive economics.

How it works

Sounds Right, an initiative from the Museum for the United Nations – UN Live, launched NATURE as an official artist on major streaming platforms on Earth Day 2024. Tracks 'featuring NATURE' — by artists including David Bowie x Brian Eno, Ellie Goulding, AURORA, Hozier and Bomba Estéreo — built on field recordings of birdsong, rain, glaciers and ocean waves, and the resulting royalties go to conservation through the Sounds Right Fund, hosted by the charity EarthPercent.

The mechanism turns listening into funding: no separate donation, no pledge, just streams. Within six months NATURE had passed 65M streams from 7.5M+ listeners in over 180 countries, and in October 2024 the fund announced its first $225,000 in grants to Indigenous- and community-led projects protecting the Tropical Andes in Colombia — from the Awá Pialapí reserve to cotton-top tamarin forest corridors.

Spotify amplified the launch through in-app promotions, out-of-home media and social channels, while AKQA contributed creative strategy, the visual identity and the launch campaign. At Cannes Lions 2025 the initiative won the Grand Prix for Innovation, with the jury honoring a model that merges creativity, technology and environmental justice.

The project reframed nature from a free resource into a credited collaborator — an artist with a profile, streams and a balance sheet that pays for her own survival.

Why it lands

  • It inserted the funding mechanism into an existing daily behavior — listening to music — so impact scales without asking anyone to do extra
  • Crediting nature as a real artist made an abstract cause tangible: she has a profile, collaborators and royalties
  • The coalition (UN Live, Spotify, AKQA, EarthPercent, artists) gave it distribution, credibility and musical quality at once
  • Results are auditable: streams, listeners and named conservation grants are all public
  • It created a reusable template other industries can copy instead of a one-off campaign

What it did

Over 65M streams from 7.5M+ listeners in 180+ countries within six months, $225,000 directed to Tropical Andes conservation by October 2024, and the Cannes Lions 2025 Innovation Grand Prix.

What you can take

Instead of asking people to donate, change the economic model: put the beneficiary inside an existing transaction people already make — streaming — and the 'ask' disappears.

Since then

By June 2025 NATURE had surpassed 150M streams, with more than $500,000 projected to reach conservation efforts by 2026 and funding set to expand to the Amazon and Congo basins. The campaign kept releasing new 'Feat. NATURE' tracks and won the Cannes Lions 2025 Innovation Grand Prix, becoming a reference case for platform-powered environmental funding.
