Sonos built its first headphones, Ace, and wanted them to connect to the living-room system. Its killer interaction: instead of pairing headphones to the TV, the headphones take audio directly from a Sonos soundbar, so any input — streaming box, game console — plays privately with spatial sound.
How it works
On May 21, 2024, Sonos announced its first-ever headphones, Sonos Ace ($449, shipping June 5). The launch was less about specs than about one interaction: TV Audio Swap, which lets the headphones take over the sound from a compatible Sonos soundbar at the press of a button — private home theater without re-pairing, adapters or setup menus.
The mechanic is deliberately simple: press and hold the Content Key on the right ear cup and the soundbar's audio moves to the headphones over a direct Wi-Fi connection; press again to hand it back to the room. A second Ace can join the same session, and the swap works with any input running into the TV — game consoles included — with optional Dolby Atmos spatial audio and dynamic head tracking.
At launch the feature worked with the Arc soundbar; two months later, in August 2024, a software update brought it to both Beam generations and the entry-level Ray and ended the iPhone/iPad requirement, so Android owners could set it up. The Verge called TV Audio Swap 'the best trick of the Sonos Ace.'
