What it had to solve
FCB, newly appointed lead brand agency after a global pitch, had to contemporise Prudential Corporation Asia's brand and launch its refreshed strategy with an almost 'un-advertising' approach.
How it works
Six Singaporean couples — husbands, wives, brothers, sisters, fathers and mothers from multi-ethnic backgrounds — sat in a stark white studio, looked at each other for four minutes and shared often intense emotional reactions, discovering they had under-invested in the people who matter most. Prudential signed off: 'Your relationships are precious, so protect them.' The content lived on a microsite with expert articles and an interview with counselling psychologist Joleen Hwee, backed by Mindshare media and Weber Shandwick social strategy.
What it did
No commercial results reported; Prudential Singapore adopted the platform internally to strengthen staff working relationships and productivity.
Background
To launch its refreshed brand strategy in Asia, Prudential turned to newly appointed lead agency FCB and a piece of psychology: Professor Arthur Aron's State University of New York research showing that when two people sit face-to-face for as little as four minutes, empathy and intimacy measurably increase. The campaign, 'Relationship Reconnect', staged that experiment as advertising.
Six Singaporean couples were recruited — husbands and wives, brothers and sisters, fathers and mothers, across multi-ethnic backgrounds. In a stark white studio they quietly looked at each other for four minutes, then shared their reactions, often visibly intense: the couples found they had not given enough attention to the people most important to them. Prudential's sign-off tied the moment to its business: 'Your relationships are precious, so protect them.'
'Insurance is about protecting the people you care most about,' said Edward Bell, CEO of FCB Greater China — the campaign aimed to help people reconnect 'at different life stages.' The idea travelled beyond the ad: Prudential Singapore kicked off an internal staff initiative using the same exercise to strengthen working relationships.
Why it lands
The experiment format let the product's promise — protect what you love — emerge from behaviour rather than a voiceover.
Aron's published research gave the tearful reactions a mechanism and a credibility a scripted film could never claim.
The internal adoption — staff running the same exercise — showed the platform worked as culture, not just campaign.
What you can take
Borrowed science makes a stunt honest: Aron's four-minute study gave the tears a mechanism — and the brand a reason to be in the room.
Since then
Launched February 2016 in Singapore as the first expression of FCB's refreshed Prudential Asia strategy, with an internal staff version following at Prudential Singapore.
