Posten's The Reinfall: Santa's star reindeer crashes from celebrity fame

Norway's postal service told Christmas from the delivery side: Rudolph's fame goes to his head in a mockumentary, while Posten delivers every year since 1647.

What it had to solve

Posten, the Norwegian postal service, makes a Christmas film every year, telling the holiday from unconventional angles; 2024's campaign was its sixth. Campaign manager Hege Barbara Aarhus said the team wanted to shift the focus away from Santa onto those who share Posten's job — delivering gifts — and to show that Posten has delivered faithfully every Christmas since 1647, no matter what happens at the North Pole.

How it works

Every year Posten, the Norwegian postal service, releases a Christmas film with an unconventional take on the holiday, and 2024's campaign was its sixth. Campaign manager Hege Barbara Aarhus said this time the team wanted to shift the focus from Santa to those who share Posten's job — delivering gifts — while showing that Posten has delivered faithfully every Christmas since 1647, no matter what happens at the North Pole.

The Reinfall is an almost four-minute mockumentary in the style of a celebrity rise-and-fall documentary. Rudolph T. Reindeer, Santa's red-nosed head reindeer, rises from short-antlered outcast to Head of Transportation, and then fame goes to his head: oversized sunglasses, parties, and disappointed teammates interviewed about his flame-out, with archival-style footage shot using cameras from different eras. The reindeer are human actors in suits and antlers, and Santa is left needing nine flyable reindeer while only eight are ready.

The joke lands on Posten's own business: celebrity delivery is fragile, while Posten has delivered every Christmas since 1647 — the punchline is the product promise. Directed by Kasper Häggström for agency POL with production by Bacon, the film premiered online, on TV and in cinemas in Norway in November 2024, and won a Bronze Lion in the Film category at Cannes Lions 2025.

Why it lands

  • The story mirrors Posten's business: Santa's celebrity reindeer deliver, and their unreliability makes the postal service's quiet century-old record the obvious alternative.
  • The rise-and-fall documentary format gives a Christmas ad a genre viewers already know, so the absurd premise plays with deadpan documentary seriousness.
  • Humans in suits and antlers, interviews with teammates and era-authentic archival footage make the fictional world feel real, which is what makes the joke work.
  • The product claim is saved for the finale, so the commercial earns its laugh before it sells.

What it did

The campaign gave Posten's oldest claim — reliable delivery since 1647 — a story: Santa's celebrity system is fragile, the postal service is not. The film won a Bronze Lion in the Film category at Cannes Lions 2025, and the D&AD awards archive carries a case page with the campaign's credits.

What you can take

Tell the story from the delivery side: casting Santa's celebrity reindeer as unreliable makes the postal service's century-old punctuality the dependable alternative — the joke carries the claim.

Since then

The Reinfall won a Bronze Lion in the Film category at Cannes Lions 2025, and the D&AD awards archive carries a case page with the campaign's credits. The sources record the concept and the award but no reach figures, so the case rests on the idea: a national postal service turned its oldest claim — reliable delivery since 1647 — into the straight man for a Christmas story about a celebrity reindeer's fall.
