Panasonic ALPHA Set wins Red Dot Best of the Best 2025 — washer-dryer as minimalist art

For decades a premium washing machine meant better technology inside a familiar box of buttons. Panasonic's China & Northeast Asia business, working with Studio F. A. Porsche, decided the flagship washer-dryer set should instead be judged the way a piece of furniture is: on the purity of its surface. The result, ALPHA Set, was built around the idea that a laundry machine could be minimalist art.

Everything mechanical was pushed behind a stainless-steel monolith. Operation is reduced to a palm-sized magnetic control knob that can sit anywhere on the body, the voice-control microphone is hidden inside the logo, the detergent dispenser lives in the base, and the softener and filter compartments are concealed behind the sleek front. Even the door participates: it automatically opens 2cm at the end of a cycle to start ventilating the drum. To keep standard dimensions, engineers adapted a compact compressor from the automotive sector into the heat-pump system.

The bet was validated by the design establishment: ALPHA Set took Best of the Best, the top honour at Red Dot Award: Product Design 2025, while twelve other Panasonic products earned Red Dot Awards in the same competition. Panasonic's design archive also records it as an iF Design Award 2025 winner, confirming that a category usually sold on drum sizes and wash programs could be won on how it looks in the room.
