New York City FC's Five Borough Bond builds its identity out of the city itself
A decade after founding, NYCFC rebuilt its brand on The Five Borough Bond: subway type, evolved crest, palette, pictograms and a mosaic system.
New York City FC
What it had to solve
Ten years since its founding, New York City FC wanted to stake its claim to the city and take on an identity equal to New York's colossal character. The brief was a rallying idea that could unite fans across all five boroughs, not just another crest update.
How it works
New York City FC was ten years old and still searching for an identity equal to its home: a club in a city of five boroughs, countless neighbourhoods and an outsized sense of self. The D&AD-recognised response was The Five Borough Bond, a creative platform and full brand system that made the city the raw material of the club's identity.
Every element was built from New York: a custom type family inspired by historic subway signage, a confident evolution of the club's crest, an energetic color palette, a pictogram set, and a dynamic mosaic graphic system. Instead of one finished mark, the club received a visual language that can be assembled from fragments of the city itself.
NYCFC announced the refresh in early 2024 ahead of its tenth-season home opener. The D&AD awards archive lists the work under Brand Identity Refresh with the club as client; the documented result is the system itself and its place in the awards record, since the archive publishes no engagement or sales metrics.
Why it lands
- Subway-signage lettering ties the club to a visual language every New Yorker already trusts, so the identity feels native rather than corporate.
- A mosaic system built from borough stories lets the brand scale beyond one crest: any fan's neighbourhood can enter the identity.
- Evolving the crest rather than replacing it kept the club recognisable while the platform around it changed.
- The Five Borough Bond names the emotional contract, five boroughs and one club, turning a rallying cry into the organising idea for every touchpoint.
What it did
The refresh turned the brand into a system: the crest now sits inside a visual language assembled from the city's own material, so any borough's story can enter the identity. NYCFC announced the undertaking in early 2024 ahead of its tenth-season home opener; the D&AD awards archive records the finished identity under Brand Identity Refresh and publishes no response metrics.
What you can take
When your market is a whole city, build the identity from that city's own vernacular, its signage, boroughs and stories, so belonging is designed into the system rather than asserted in a slogan.
Since then
The Five Borough Bond became the organising platform for New York City FC's identity, spanning typography, crest, colour, pictograms and graphics rather than a single logo. The club announced the refresh in early 2024 before its tenth-season home opener, and the completed system is preserved in the D&AD awards archive as a Brand Identity Refresh case. No response metrics are published with the archive entry, so the lasting outcome is the platform itself: proof that a club can build its brand out of the city it plays for.
