What it had to solve
Amsterdam's Museumnacht needed to reach young audiences who don't see a place for themselves in museums, and lower the threshold to art and culture without prior expectations.
How it works
A film and photography campaign shot on 35mm, directed by CZAR's Kay Lindhout with photographer Julia Marino adding her own eye, plus hand-painted animation by Midhat Avdagic 'referring to the sentiment of bringing back the past into today' — picking up art references in contemporary settings.
What it did
No results reported. The stated aim: a visually captivating film that sticks in minds, opens imagination and makes viewers curious what their own Museumnacht might be like.
Background
LBBOnline reported in September 2019 on the campaign for that year's Museumnacht, Amsterdam's museum night, produced by CZAR Amsterdam around the event theme 'The First Time' — the moment you look, listen or feel something for the first time and it changes something in you.
Director Kay Lindhout, who came up with the initial concept with creatives Scott Kooken and Michael James Phillips, framed the idea: 'when you look at art you get to tap in to someone else's memories and creativity, and enrich your own world with it.' N8 brand manager Jordy den Haan named the real barrier: 'There is the impression among young people that an opinion is expected from you as soon as you enter the museum... With this campaign we want to remove that threshold and give the message that there are actually no rules.'
The campaign combined film and photography shot on 35mm for a unique look, with photographer Julia Marino brought on to shape the final look and feel, and hand-painted animation by Midhat Avdagic that gestures at bringing the past into today. The brief was to help young people 'cross the bridge into a world of artistic heritage' by picking up art references in a contemporary setting.
Why it lands
The insight is psychological, not demographic: young visitors fear being graded on their opinions.
The 'first time' framing makes ignorance a virtue — everyone's first encounter counts equally.
Shooting on 35mm with hand-painted animation mirrors the message: old art, present tense.
Client trust let the director, photographer and animator co-author the final look.
What you can take
The barrier to culture isn't price but performance anxiety: tell newcomers there are no rules, and the museum stops being a test.
Since then
The campaign promoted the 2019 edition of Museumnacht across film and photography. No attendance results were reported.
