Mind lets breakthrough artists speak the mental-health stories of unheard communities

Mind and Universal Music paired people with lived mental-health experience with artists from their own culture, who performed their stories as spoken word.

What it had to solve

Many communities feel disconnected from the mental health system: communications fail to represent or resonate with them, so people don't seek the support they need. Mind wanted the help it offers to be heard by exactly those audiences.

How it works

Mind started from a gap in representation: many communities feel disconnected from the mental health system because the communications around it fail to represent or resonate with them, and people who don't see themselves in a service don't seek it out. The problem was not the absence of help but the absence of voices the audience recognised.

The campaign, 'If This Speaks To You, Speak To Us,' answered by changing who speaks. Mind worked with Universal Music to pair real people with experience of mental health problems with breakthrough artists who share a similar cultural background. The artists wrote and performed spoken-word pieces representing the advisors' stories, giving each account an authentic, relatable and representative voice.

Recognition was the mechanism: a listener who hears their own cultural references, dialect and experience in the telling is more likely to accept that the message is for them — and the tagline turned that moment of recognition into a direct invitation to Mind's support. D&AD keeps the work in its awards archive, which records the idea rather than audience figures.

Why it lands

  • Pairing each story with an artist from the same background guarantees the voice carries the cultural references the audience lives in.
  • Spoken word performs feeling rather than stating it, so empathy lands before any instruction about seeking help.
  • The advisor's real experience anchors the art in truth, keeping the campaign grounded instead of abstract.
  • The tagline converts the moment of recognition into an offer of support at exactly the instant the listener feels addressed.

What it did

The campaign replaced the institutional voice with one the audience could recognise as their own, so recognition itself became the call to action. D&AD carries the work in its awards archive; the page records no reach or contact figures.

What you can take

To reach people a message has never reached, change who delivers it: an artist from the audience's own culture can make a stranger's mental-health story feel like it belongs to them.

Since then

D&AD keeps the work in its awards archive, where the case rests on the mechanism — representation achieved by changing who speaks, not only what is said — because the page records no audience or contact figures. What endures is the template: pair a real person's experience with a performer the intended audience already trusts, and let the story arrive in a voice that sounds like their own.
