What it had to solve
Marcomonde makes socks and footwear carrying the colours and patterns of streets around the world — a fusion of culture and fashion. Its first permanent retail space had to state the brand's identity in just under 20 square metres, on the fourth floor of the eleven-storey Shibuya PARCO, in front of the escalator landing.
How it works
Uufie composed the space of stairs, millwork and floor as one free-standing, abstract geometric block, uniformly finished in durable epoxy-resin mortar with grey undertones so the products carry the colour. Clothing hangs from simple industrial piping; stainless-steel pipe and high-translucency glass shelves complement the building. The apparent solid block is in fact a shell concealing storage, a change room and a desk.
What it did
The source records no commercial figures. The store works as the brand statement: an illusion of a stairway to a secret place packs physical disorientation and brand story into 19.5 square metres.
Background
For Japanese fashion brand Marcomonde's first permanent retail space, Uufie built a store in Shibuya PARCO that looks like a staircase — and leads nowhere. The 19.5-square-metre unit, sited in front of the escalator landing on the fourth floor of the eleven-storey department store, is conceived as a free-standing, abstract geometric sculpture: an intriguing physical disorientation suggesting a stairway to a secret place.
Socks and footwear — the brand's products carry the colours and patterns of streets around the world — are casually displayed along the staircase steps as if animated, while clothing hangs on simple industrial piping. The stair surfaces, walls, floors and panels are uniformly finished in grey-toned epoxy-resin mortar, so the colour and pattern of the products are the only saturated elements in the space.
The sculpture is also working retail architecture: the assembled block looks solid but is a shell with hidden functional chambers for storage, a change room and a desk. Lighting was consulted by Izumi Okayasu Lighting Design Office, contractor Ishimaru, photography by Takumi Ota.
Why it lands
The staircase is a fitting brand metaphor for a label built on the world's streets: it promises movement, then delivers surprise.
Uniform grey finish and casual display put all the colour on the socks — the product is the hero of the composition.
The solid-looking shell solves a 19.5 sqm programme — storage, change room, desk — inside a single sculptural gesture.
What you can take
In a few square metres, architecture can do what advertising can't: an object that disorients — a staircase to nowhere — makes shoppers into explorers who remember the brand as a place.
Since then
The store opened in 2020 as Marcomonde's first permanent retail space; the source records no later developments.
