ChilledCow's 24/7 lofi stream invents the study radio — 218M views, then renamed Lofi Girl

A French creator turned a lo-fi playlist into an endless live 'radio' starring an animated girl studying; the stream became a companion, not a video.

What it had to solve

Anonymous French creator Dimitri ran a lo-fi hip-hop playlist that listeners told him they used while studying. Instead of uploading more videos, he made the channel a single always-on live stream with a girl doing homework as its face.

How it works

Lofi Girl, originally called ChilledCow, is a YouTube channel built around a single idea: an endless live stream of lo-fi hip-hop beats with an animated girl doing homework at her desk. French creator Dimitri launched the 24/7 stream in 2017 after listeners told him they used his compilations to study or work. Instead of posting individual videos, he kept one continuous 'radio' running.

The first face of the stream was a GIF from Studio Ghibli's film Whisper of the Heart. That choice nearly killed the channel: a copyright takedown shut the stream down between July and October 2017, just months after it started. When the channel returned, Dimitri replaced the GIF with an original, copyright-free animation of a different girl — the character that would become the brand.

The format worked because it was a place, not a video. By February 2020 the single stream had run for more than 13,000 hours and amassed 218 million views, one of the longest videos in YouTube history. When YouTube mistakenly terminated the channel in February 2020, fans reacted as if a study group had vanished; the channel was restored within a day and YouTube apologized.

In March 2021, on the channel's sixth anniversary, ChilledCow renamed itself Lofi Girl, officially making the character the business: the girl was even turned into a one-foot-tall figurine. The stream and its spin-offs kept running, and Lofi Girl grew into a music brand with its own label, releasing the lo-fi artists who had soundtracked the stream all along.

Why it lands

  • The always-on format turned a playlist into a background companion for studying and working.
  • The animated girl gave an anonymous music channel a memorable, ownable face.
  • The copyright scare pushed the creator to own the character — which later became the brand.
  • Chat and community made the stream feel like a shared study room, deepening loyalty.

What it did

By February 2020 the one stream had run more than 13,000 hours and amassed 218 million views, making it one of the longest videos in YouTube history; a mistaken one-day channel termination triggered an outpouring of community grief, and the character later became a 1-foot figurine and the brand itself.

What you can take

A product that is always on becomes a relationship: the endless stream made the channel a study buddy, and the animated girl gave an anonymous channel a face worth naming the business after.

Since then

After the February 2020 false termination, YouTube reinstated the channel within a day and admitted the mistake, and the incident made the stream one of the most recognizable on the platform. The 2021 rebrand to Lofi Girl completed the transition from anonymous playlist channel to character brand, with merchandise, multiple spin-off streams and a record label releasing artists who appeared on the radio. The stream became part of internet culture — the studying girl a fixture of millions of tabs — and the format was widely copied by other lo-fi and chill-music channels.
