Slack and Discord communities grow by chatting, but their archives sit behind logins and stay invisible to search engines, so the same questions get asked again and again. Linen's maintainer, a former open-source maintainer, wanted communities to be findable through search instead.
How it works
In October 2022 Linen launched on Hacker News as an open-source Slack alternative for communities. Its founding observation was that chat communities accumulate enormous knowledge while their archives stay invisible: Slack and Discord history sits behind logins, is barely indexed by search engines, and so every new member asks the same questions the group already answered.
Linen's answer was to make chat content behave like the open web. Public channels and threads sync to linen.dev/s/workspace pages that anyone can read without signing in, and Google indexes them; the paid edition hosts the community's conversations on its own subdomain with a 301 redirect so all SEO value lands on the community's domain. Privacy controls make the openness defensible: only public channels sync, member data is reduced to display names and pictures, and names can be anonymized.
The launch drew 292 points and 76 comments on Hacker News, and the repository kept evolving — by the archive's 2026 snapshot it showed 2.8k stars, 109 forks and 3,299 commits. Why it lands
- Chat tools default to private archives, but community support needs the opposite: answers only help when people can find them, and search is how new members find them.
