What it had to solve

Nine years after the third-generation Nest Learning Thermostat, Google had to justify a $279.99 flagship against cheaper connected thermostats. A long-standing customer complaint was that the "learning" Nest behaved like a black box — quietly cranking the heat on a sunny afternoon for no visible reason. Google decided the answer was not more features but a smarter, transparent thermostat.

How it works

The Nest Learning Thermostat created the smart-thermostat category in 2011, but by 2024 Google had not updated its flagship model for nine years, and cheaper connected thermostats filled the market. Rather than answer with a speaker, display or hub, Google rebuilt the product around two ideas: presence sensing through its Soli radar, and an AI whose decisions are visible and reversible.

The design problem was trust. Owners complained that the learning Nest acted like a black box — it quietly changed the schedule and could crank the heat for reasons nobody could see. Google's head of product Anish Kattukaran told The Verge: "We wanted to take the black box approach out of it. It's an incredibly intelligent device, but that shouldn't mean you don't know what's going on." The result: Smart Schedule still learns from motion and chosen temperatures, but every adjustment is surfaced in the Google Home app, where it can run automatically or be accepted or rejected.

Presence became part of the interface itself. The Soli radar lets Dynamic Farsight change the 2.7-inch display by distance: from across the room it shows simple time, weather or temperature, and as you approach it transitions to richer data with three customizable "complications." Google also added natural heating and cooling (pausing the furnace when sunlight warms the house), an adaptive eco mode, an HVAC health monitor, smart ventilation that checks outdoor air quality, Matter support, and a redesigned temperature sensor that can average readings across up to six rooms.

The result, launched August 20, 2024 in the US and Canada at $279.99, was a product reviewers praised for doing one job well. The Verge's long-term review called it "the gold standard" and noted that the transparency fixes were a "welcome change from the sometimes inscrutable actions of the earlier versions." The lesson Google shipped was that machine-learning products need an explainable layer to be trusted in the home.
