GBGT Box's nested five-box set re-enacts Earth's atmosphere, ending in a seed to plant

Premium box maker GBGT Box turns a nested set of five boxes into Earth's atmosphere — each prints its footprint, the innermost hides a ginkgo seed to plant.

What it had to solve

GBGT Box makes climate-smart, functional packaging for the premium market. Few packaging firms say what their products cost the planet, so the company's showcase set had to demonstrate both craftsmanship and low-impact materials at the same time.

How it works

GBGT Box is a specialist in climate-smart, functional packaging for the premium market. Its challenge was that few packaging firms ever say what their boxes cost the planet — so the company asked Stockholm studio Bedow to build a showcase that would prove its low-impact approach instead of asserting it.

'A Lovely Atmosphere' answered with a nested set of five premium boxes standing for the five layers of the Earth's atmosphere. Each box gets its own artwork and story, from the anamorphic lettering of the outermost exosphere box down to the troposphere, and opening each one unfolds a tray that reveals the layer beneath.

The metaphor runs deeper than decoration: as the atmosphere protects life on Earth, a box protects its contents — and GBGT Box's low-impact materials protect the planet too. Every box prints its components and carbon calculation, and inside the final box sits a ginkgo seed the recipient can plant, so the packaging literally grows into the thing it argues for.

Why it lands

  • The product is the pitch: five nested boxes make GBGT Box's craft, materials and footprint tangible in a single unboxing.
  • The atmosphere metaphor gives five separate boxes a story with an order, so opening them feels like a journey rather than a pile.
  • Printing carbon calculations on each box makes an environmental claim verifiable instead of decorative.
  • Ending on a plantable seed closes the loop: the recipient finishes the experience by doing the sustainable thing.

What it did

The set became a catalogue of GBGT Box's materials and techniques, ran through the 2024 awards season — including a D&AD shortlist entry, a One Show Bronze and Sweden's Guldägget Gold — and turned a packaging supplier's sustainability claim into the product itself.

What you can take

If sustainability is your argument, make the object demonstrate it: materials lists, printed carbon numbers and a seed to plant turn a claim into an experience a buyer can hold.

Since then

The set travelled through the 2024 design-award season, earning a D&AD shortlist entry, a One Show Bronze, an ADC New York Silver and Sweden's Guldägget Gold among other honors. For GBGT Box it became a reusable calling card that explained its precision-slicing technology and climate-smart materials to premium clients in one object.
