Emart turns noon sunlight into a scannable shadow QR code; lunch sales up 25%
Cheil installed 3D QR sculptures whose shadows align only at solar noon; scanning between 12–1pm earned coupons and lifted February lunch-hour sales 25%.

What it had to solve
Emart was Korea's No.1 discount store, but sales dropped sharply during the 12pm–1pm lunch hour. Cheil had to drive traffic and orders in that dead window to defend the market-leader position.
How it works
Emart was Korea's No.1 discount store, but it had a visible weakness: sales collapsed during the 12pm–1pm lunch hour, when office workers were too busy to shop. Cheil Worldwide's brief was to defend the market-leader position by reviving exactly that dead window.
Instead of a broadcast sale, Cheil designed 3D QR relief sculptures and installed them so the sun's shadow aligned into a scannable code only when it reached its zenith. Scanning took shoppers to the SunnySale mobile homepage, where they received special offers including a $12 coupon, with purchases delivered straight to their homes.
The campaign started at 14 locations in Seoul and grew to 36 installations. During February it issued more than 12,000 coupons, lifted new Emart memberships by 58%, and increased sales during lunch hours by 25%.
The restraint was the idea: the promotion could only exist for one hour a day, so it created its own urgency and its own media moment. It won a Gold Direct Lion at Cannes Lions 2012 and a Bronze at the London International Awards in the Non-Traditional Interactive Installations category.
Why it lands
- The medium embodied the message — a shadow that appears only at noon made the 12–1pm window the whole point.
- Scarcity was built into physics: the offer literally could not be accessed outside the target hour.
- It converted a passive promotion into a daily, repeatable game that shoppers could anticipate and share.
- Measurable behavior changed: 12,000+ coupons, +58% new memberships, and +25% lunch-hour sales in one month.
What it did
Over 12,000 coupons were issued; new Emart memberships rose 58% in February and lunch-hour sales rose 25%; the work won a Gold Direct Lion at Cannes Lions 2012 and a Bronze at the London International Awards.
What you can take
Dead time is a design problem, not just a discount problem: make the offer exist only at the exact minute you need traffic, and the trick itself becomes the reason people show up on schedule.
Since then
Sunny Sale became one of Cheil Worldwide's marquee 2012 wins — the agency took 12 Lions across five categories at Cannes that year — and the time-bound shadow QR entered promotional case-study collections as a reference for location-based activation. The campaign also showed Korean retail marketing being judged on physical-world interaction rather than broadcast spend.
