Denny's Sticky Kicks: high-tops with real maple syrup inside sell out in 60 seconds
Denny's and sneaker artist Mache seal real diner syrup into transparent shoe panels — a $195 limited drop gone in one minute on National Maple Syrup Day.
Denny's
What it had to solve
Denny's had slipped from pop-culture icon to 'value-driven utility' and wanted Gen Z to see the brand as in-culture again. Its signature condiment — the maple syrup poured over Grand Slams — was always 'the golden thread' of its identity, but it had never left the breakfast plate.
How it works
Denny's, the American diner chain founded in the 1950s, had gone from pop-culture staple to a 'value-driven utility' in the eyes of younger eaters. Its brand team, with PR agency FINN Partners, wanted a Gen Z cultural moment — and decided the answer was syrup, the condiment it pours over its Grand Slam breakfasts.
On 9–10 December 2025 the chain unveiled Sticky Kicks, a collaboration with footwear artist Mache: limited high-top sneakers in syrup-gold patent leather with tumbled yellow panels, an embossed Denny's logo, and real Denny's maple syrup sealed inside a transparent panel. 'Sticky Kicks are impractical, unnecessary and completely over the top, which is exactly why we love them,' said chief brand officer Ellie Doty. The release carried a warning: 'Do not puncture the shoes or eat the syrup from the shoes for any reason. These drips are for style only.'
The $195 shoes, in men's sizes 8–13, dropped on 17 December — National Maple Syrup Day — at noon ET, exclusively on the dinerdrip.com microsite. Denny's Rewards members unlocked the site an hour early with a special code, a tiered-access structure meant to turn hype into lasting loyalty sign-ups. According to FINN Partners, the stock disappeared in roughly 60 seconds, resale prices climbed past $1,500, and the stunt generated more than 2 billion earned-media impressions across 50+ national features, including The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Good Morning America.
At the 30th annual Webby Awards in April 2026, the jury named Denny's Sticky Kicks the winner for Best Launch or Drop in Advertising, Media & PR. FINN's case study credits the drop with roughly 254 million social impressions, 9,000+ new Denny's Rewards leads and a 100% year-over-year jump in the brand's share of voice.
Why it lands
- Real syrup in transparent shoe panels makes a diner condiment literal streetwear, so the product itself carries the brand joke.
- Syrup is Denny's own signature asset, so the stunt is instantly on-brand rather than a borrowed trend.
- Scarcity plus a members-only early window converts viral curiosity into measurable loyalty sign-ups.
- The 'do not eat the syrup' warning turns a product launch into shareable comedy without ever explaining the joke.
What it did
FINN Partners reports the limited stock sold out in about 60 seconds, drove more than 2 billion earned-media impressions and 254 million social impressions, landed 50+ national news features including The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Good Morning America, added 9,000+ new leads to Denny's Rewards, and pushed resale values past $1,500 a pair.
What you can take
Turn a brand's signature substance into scarce streetwear: syrup in sneakers puts Denny's physically inside 'drip' culture, while a members-only drop turns hype into loyalty sign-ups.
Since then
FINN Partners reports that Sticky Kicks sold out in about 60 seconds and became a collector item with resale values above $1,500, drawing 2 billion+ earned-media impressions and national TV features on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Good Morning America. The drop added more than 9,000 new leads to the Denny's Rewards program and lifted the brand's share of voice by 100% year over year, according to the agency. In April 2026 the work won Best Launch or Drop at the 30th Webby Awards, capping a campaign that moved Denny's narrative from value meals to cultural currency.
