Bannerbear: a solo dev's image-generation API hits $10K MRR by publishing the journey
One developer quits his job, builds an API that auto-generates marketing images, and documents every revenue milestone to $10K MRR.
Bannerbear
What it had to solve
Bannerbear began as one of several hobby startups with no revenue model; the solo founder had a two-year runway, and almost a year of it was already burned.
How it works
Jon Yongfook quit his job in January 2019 with two years of savings and spent almost a year burning money on the '12 startups in 12 months' challenge, shipping seven products that earned nothing. The one thread he kept liking was image generation, which he knew firsthand from an e-commerce job where assets were made by hand every day.
He focused on that space, built Previewmojo for Open Graph images, rebranded it as Bannerbear, and in March 2020 went all-in on an API plus template editor. Revenue barely moved at first ($488 MRR), but a 50/50 rhythm of one week coding, one week marketing — tweeting and documenting each release — pushed MRR to $6,109 by October 2020.
A Jobs-to-be-Done repositioning around 'automating and scaling marketing' carried Bannerbear to $10,455 MRR in January 2021, about two years after he started. The founder's write-up of that journey itself went viral in the bootstrapped-SaaS world, landing on the Hacker News front page, and the company later reported roughly $1M ARR in September 2025.
Why it lands
- The product solved a pain the founder had felt at work, so he kept building even when early traction was lukewarm.
- Publishing each revenue milestone turned the business itself into content that developers and bootstrappers shared.
- Switching from a niche Open Graph image tool to an API for automated marketing images opened far more use cases and users.
- Alternating build weeks with marketing weeks kept distribution as scheduled as development, not an afterthought.
What it did
MRR went from $400 (Sep 2019) to $472 (Jan 2020) to $488 (Mar 2020) to $6,109 (Oct 2020) to $10,455 (Jan 2021); the Journey to $10K MRR post reached the Hacker News front page, and by September 2025 Bannerbear reported about $1M ARR.
What you can take
When you can't outspend rivals, out-document them: a public MRR journal doubles as marketing and trust, and positioning around the customer's job beats pitching a niche feature.
Since then
The API pivot churned some early customers who had signed up for the Open Graph tool, but the wider positioning won new ones. The Journey to $10K MRR post became a canonical artifact of the bootstrapped-SaaS community, often cited in indie hacker circles. Bannerbear stayed bootstrapped and solo for years, later reporting $630K ARR in 2026 write-ups and about $1M ARR as of September 2025 per founder statements tracked by startupfounderstories.com.
