Amazon's Kindle Colorsoft brings color to E Ink reading — the first color Kindle

What it had to solve
Kindles had been monochrome since 2007 while rivals shipped color E Ink; Amazon wanted color for covers, cookbooks and comics without glare, backlight harshness, or sacrificing battery life.
How it works
In 2024, after 17 years of monochrome Kindles, Amazon finally added color. The Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition used a 7-inch display that Amazon said was designed specifically for reading, with none of the harsh glare or intense light of a conventional backlit screen.
The engineering was bespoke: custom-formulated coatings between the display layers enhance color, a light guide with micro-deflectors minimizes stray light, and an ultra-thin coating plus an oxide backplane improve contrast, page-turn speed and image quality. The result was a reading-native color experience for covers, cookbooks, comics and graphic novels, plus color highlights searchable by hue.
Priced at $279.99 and shipping October 30, 2024, the Colorsoft anchored a four-device Kindle refresh alongside a reimagined Scribe, a faster Paperwhite and a new entry-level Kindle. But early buyers reported a yellow band along the bottom of the display; Amazon confirmed it, delayed new shipments, and promised replacements or refunds while adjusting production so new devices would not show the issue.

Amazon said it was making adjustments so new devices would not have the issue, offered existing customers a replacement or refund, and shipping dates slipped as replacements were fulfilled alongside new orders. The episode became a case study in launching ambitious display technology at scale — the first color Kindle arrived, but its quality control became the story of the first weeks.
