Amazon Books animates reading's inner magic in 'That Reading Feeling Awaits'
Six films show readers lost inside books, each genre rendered in its own animation style — making reading's invisible magic visible.
Amazon Books (Amazon UK)
What it had to solve
Amazon Books started from a paradox: people feel a real connection to books and believe they should read more, yet reading keeps losing out to streaming and scrolling. The brief was to inspire people to read more — and get more out of what they read — by celebrating books at the foundation of culture.
How it works
Most people believe they should read more and feel a real connection to books, yet reading keeps losing out to streaming and scrolling. Amazon Books' campaign set out to inspire people to read more and to get more out of what they read — not by pushing titles, but by celebrating books at the foundation of culture.
'That Reading Feeling Awaits' gave life to the invisible magic that happens inside our imaginations when we are engrossed in a book. The campaign comprised six films, each combining live action with a bespoke animation style specific to a genre: as the reader disappears into the story, the world of the book erupts around them, and the animation itself demonstrates what that particular kind of story does to the mind.
The films made an internal experience shareable, giving Amazon Books a way to talk about reading as an imaginative act rather than a transaction. The work was recorded in D&AD's archive, and Amazon Books later extended the same idea in a 2025 follow-up campaign, 'Bring a Book to Life', which it framed as an evolution of this first platform.
Why it lands
- It shows the product's real benefit — the inner world of a story — instead of a stack of covers, which any bookseller could show.
- Giving each genre its own animation style proves that different books offer different experiences, strengthening the case for reading more.
- Watching a reader vanish into a book makes absorption itself aspirational, turning an activity people postpone into a visible pleasure.
- By celebrating books as the foundation of culture, the campaign positioned Amazon Books as a champion of reading rather than merely a retailer of them.
What it did
The films gave Amazon Books a creative platform about why reading matters rather than which titles to buy, making an internal, private experience something an audience could watch and want. The work was recorded in D&AD's archive, and Amazon Books extended the same idea in a 2025 follow-up campaign it framed as an evolution of this first platform.
What you can take
To sell a slow, private pleasure, don't advertise the product — advertise the experience it creates inside the reader, and make that experience visible enough to want.
Since then
Amazon Books kept the idea: by 2025, Droga5 London's follow-up campaign 'Bring a Book to Life' was described as an evolution of 'That Reading Feeling Awaits', extending the animation approach to Amazon Books across the UK, Germany and the US. The original films also stayed in awards archives such as D&AD's as a reference for making the act of reading cinematic.
