What it had to solve
ACUVUE's global positioning is that contact lenses transform lives; in China the brand had to break through health barriers and empower millennials in a tough, competitive environment.
How it works
A digital video experiment: participants photographed their old selves and named the change they wanted, received a makeover, coaching on expressing confidence through their eyes and a professional eye exam with ACUVUE lenses; KOLs then asked followers to commit to change for free lenses, alongside a LinkedIn partnership and education around ACUVUE's Eye Care Day on June 6.
What it did
Results, per McCann's Cia Hatzi: more than 26 million impressions, 13 million views and 20,000-plus engagements to date — numbers that, she said, took everyone by surprise.
Background
In May 2017 McCann Worldgroup Shanghai launched ACUVUE's 'Dare to Change' campaign, asking Chinese millennials to share the one thing they most wanted to change about themselves — the thing preventing them from reaching their full potential. The context was stark: over 70% of the Chinese population needs some type of vision correction, and, per ACUVUE China marketing director Anne Dumesges, eye health is the number one barrier to confidence for Chinese millennials while awareness remains low due to misconceptions and a lack of standardised professional eye care.
The launch film documented an experiment. Two participants, invited for a session with a lifestyle consultant, were candid about wanting to be noticed more but lacking confidence. They photographed their old selves and wrote down what they most wanted to change, then received a makeover, coaching in communicating confidence through the eyes, an eye exam and ACUVUE lens fitting. Over a two-week trial their friends secretly filmed and photographed them; back in the studio they were shown the transformations their friends had captured, and ended the film tearing up the photo of their old selves.
The campaign continued on social media, where lifestyle KOLs asked millennial followers to commit to a change in return for exclusive free contact lenses, supported by a LinkedIn partnership and education tied to ACUVUE's Eye Care Day on June 6. McCann APAC's Cia Hatzi reported more than 26 million impressions, 13 million views and 20,000-plus engagements to date.
Why it lands
The reframing sells lenses as the key to confidence and life change, not vision correction.
Friends' secret footage makes the transformation proof, not a claim — the reveal is emotional evidence.
KOL distribution matched how Chinese millennials actually encounter brands, with free lenses as the participation hook.
Anchoring to Eye Care Day gave the campaign a health-education spine beyond the sell.
What you can take
Sell the transformation, not the product: when your category is a confidence barrier, film the person changing and the lens sells itself.
Since then
The campaign ran with a viral video, social activation and the LinkedIn partnership through mid-2017, culminating in education around ACUVUE's Eye Care Day on June 6, 2017. No longer-term sales results were published with the announcement.
