Reinforce 1Life as a direct insurer that understands real people's lives, with absolute simplicity — one SMS, one phone call, one policy — as its unique offering

Egg Films' director Slim shot a narration-driven film that avoided obvious moments like the wedding and resisted comedy, observing small real moments instead; the client and agency let the film keep evolving through briefing, shooting and edit.

1Life's Rick Rupping said the campaign delivered on the brand's 'Changing Lives' premise and went beyond expectations; no airtime or sales results were reported.

'One' is a film for 1Life, a South African direct life insurer, created by House of Brave (creatives Gareth O'Callaghan and Conan Green under ECD Vanessa Pearson) and directed by Slim of Egg Films. It condenses a 17-year love story into a narration-driven minute that counts its way up: one look at a function, two cups of coffee, three smiley SMS faces, four hours of argumentative silence, five tickles, six days apart, all the way to 17 years and counting.

The counting lands on the campaign line 'Sometimes one simple thing can change your life', equated with 1Life's promise of simplicity: one SMS, one phone call or one policy can change your life. Pearson said the film had to differentiate the brand in a cluttered environment while keeping an endearing, authentic tone.

Director Slim said the team avoided clichéd moments like the wedding and refused to play for comedy, wanting to observe real moments and keep everything emotional and human. He praised the client and agency for openness: the version briefed, the version imagined, the version shot and the version edited were all allowed to differ in service of the idea.

Life insurance ads live in clichés; a counting love story gives the category's 'one simple thing' claim an emotional proof

The number structure mirrors the product promise — one SMS, one call, one policy — so form and message are the same device

Avoiding wedding-day clichés and gags kept the tone sincere, which is what Pearson said the differentiation required

A counting structure makes an abstraction concrete: the insurer's 'one' only means something because the film first earned it through seventeen small numbers of a shared life.

The campaign carried the line 'Sometimes one simple thing can change your life', and 1Life's head of marketing Rick Rupping said it went beyond the brand's expectations and helped South Africans relate pieces of their own lives.
